The Defaults of Respect

I’m a computer programmer and it’s quite common in programming to set default values or behaviors in a bunch of things.

The same can be said for respect, the only difference is that we do not set the defaults as they’re already there.

By default we are all expected to respect one another.

Default values however are bound to change.

Respect changes based on how an individual treats another. Be selfish and respect for you goes down. Be nice and respect for you goes up.

Respect is not an iron rod meant to beat subordinates into submission. I see it as a gauge that changes over time based on reciprocity.
